I was nice enough to name them one of my bands to watch for this year, and now Pitchfork gives their new album, Rip It Off, a decent review (an 8.4? Jose Fritz will not be pleased,) maybe it is time that Times New Viking will get their moment in the sun. The lo-fi revolution is back in a big way; I mean the Pitchfork review does mention Slanted & Enchanted and Alien Lanes (which, on a complete side note, is only my favorite GBV album. Might be why I took such a liking to what some may call an inaudible cacophony.) Like I said before and I'll say it again, there is a melody buried under on that dissonance, just pay attention. The songs are short and breezy and catchy and noisier than early Sonic Youth at times. The band will celebrate the release of their Matador debut support Super Furry Animals on their upcoming U.S. tour in February.
